“The Resistance of Honey” shortlisted at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA)

‘The Resistance of Honey’ is an immersive 360 degree video commissioned by the BBC Research and Development directed and edited by film-maker Peter Boyd Maclean with Dr Peter Passmore, senior lecturer in Computing Science at Middlesex University, as technical supervisor.

The film profiles urban beekeeper and musician Bioni Samp, who mixes his two passions of beekeeping and experimental electronic music to make music from his bees. The film trailer is

available to watch online. It is best viewed through a virtual reality headset.

The 360 film has been shortlisted at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in the category of IDFA DocLab Competition for Digital Storytelling, which is open to interactive projects. The Festival started on 16 November and will run until 27 November.

Executive producer Zillah Watson, of BBC Research and Development commented, “This content has pushed both editorial and technical boundaries and led to solid research.”

The 360 film has been used in Middlesex research in collaboration with Maxine Glancy (BBC Lead Research Scientist and Middlesex alumnus) and colleagues. Middlesex PhD student Adam

Philpot will be presenting the groups work on user studies of 360 video at the International Conference on Artificial Reality and Telexistence and the Eurographics Symposium of Virtual

Environments (ICAT-EGVE 2016) in Arkansas, USA next month.
