A creative unearthing of Blackheath’s glorious and perhaps less well known past that is told through new music, words, sauerkraut and hotdogs.
Third Degree Burns brings together the contemporary with the traditional whilst being, by turns, lighthearted – even frivolous – thought provoking and politically alert.
From the Cornish rebellion of 1497 and the Black Death to highwaymen, gibbets and the WWII anti-aircraft installations, fireworks and the London Marathon, this airy corner of London never fails to surprise and inspire. A roll call of local celebrated residents range from Peter the Great to Fanny Craddock, Fela Kuti, Paul Rutherford, Emily Davison and Jimmy Hendrix.
The evening features new commissions for archeological solo strings and electronics featuring cellist Laura Moody, Nic Pendlebury on viola and Joe Townsend on violin; bass virtuoso Simon Fell will lead Paul Rutherford’s Quasimode 3 and is joined by saxophonist John Butcher; Kate Halsall will perform psychogeography alongside sonic artist Myr and the London Sound Survey; and Gabriel Prokoviev (NONCLASSICALl) will finish the evening with a DJ set.
