Papers are invited for Kingston University’s forthcoming joint conference Reflected Shadows: Folklore and the Gothic. We welcome papers on colonial Gothic, urban Gothic, commodity Gothic, screen Gothic, Gothic hauntology and Gothic parody – any tradition that has been influenced by folk narrative or other genres of folklore. Screaming skulls or steampunk, walled-up nuns or neo-medievalism – contributions should seek to address the creative reflection of popular traditions in Gothic cultural forms. Whether you’re coming from Otranto or Gormenghast, from Whitby or Innsmouth – never say nevermore!

If you would like to present a paper, please send your abstract of maximum 150 words, plus a brief biographical note, to: thefolkloresociety@gmail.com before 31 December 2015.

The Conference

The Keynote Address will be by Prof. Fred Botting: ‘Zombies: Neither Gothic nor Folklore’.

The Folklore Society’s Annual General Meeting 2016 will be in the afternoon on Friday 15 April, along with Prof. James Grayson’s FLS Presidential Address: ‘Invading Mongols and the Preservation of Korean Traditions: The Monk Iryon and the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms’.

The conference will begin at 2pm on Friday 15th and will close after lunch on Sunday 17th.

The fee for speakers, students, pensioners, FLS members and Kingston University staff will be approximately £75 for all three days, and day rates will be available. The conference fee includes lunch on Saturday and Sunday as well as refreshments between sessions. Accommodation is not provided but a hotel close to Kingston University will offer a discount for our conference delegates.

A visit to Strawberry Hill, Horace Walpole’s Gothic Castle, is anticipated for the afternoon on Sunday 17 April, after the conference closes.
