Please note: This event is open to Early Career Researchers from TCCE member universities and Exchange partner HEIs and creatives from cultural and creative SMEs looking for an introduction into this area.
Nick Catliff, Managing Director of Lion Television and pitching maestro, will lead an informal and informative workshop for early career researchers (from TCCE and Exchange partner organisations) as well as creatives from cultural and creative SMEs who would like to gain an insight into how the commissioning process for television actually works.
Attendees will be expertly guided through how best to present themselves and their ideas in a range of different situations and contexts, with top tips and practice pitching. There will also be the opportunity for networking.

Managing Director, Lion Television
Before becoming one of the founders of Lion Television, Nick was at the BBC which he joined as a graduate trainee. While at the BBC he worked on a range of current affairs and investigative programmes as a producer and director. He was the series producer of “The Trial” for BBC2 the first time television cameras had been allowed inside British courtrooms.
He also created “Airport” for BBC1 which has gone on to be the longest running doc-soap on British television. He also produced and directed single documentaries for BBC1’s “Inside Story” strand and also for BBC2’s “40 Minutes”.
Nick was one of the three founders of Lion Television in 1997.
Lion makes over 150 hours of content every year and has almost 100 staff as well as many freelancers working at its three bases in London, Glasgow and New York.
From its UK offices Lion makes a wide range of programmes. These include children’s sketch comedy “Horrible Histories,” entertainment formats such as “Sexy Beasts” and “Playing it Straight” documentaries such as “British Airways,” “Britain from Above” and “Rebuilding the World Trade Centre,” history programmes such as “Meet The Roman Empire with Mary Beard,” “Bomber Boys with Ewan McGregor” and “The Glory of Egypt with Joanna Fletcher” and Daytime formats including “Homes Under The Hammer.” Lion works with broadcasters in many countries, most notably with the main Chinese networks including state broadcaster CCTV and digital network 10 Cent. Lion is currently making “Chinese New Year Live“ for BBC2.
Lion also has a US base in New York from where it makes quiz shows such as “Cash Cab,” entertainment formats including “Driven to Love” and “Money from Strangers,” cooking shows such as “Junk Food Flip” and “Easy Chinese,” documentary series such as “America Revealed,” the long running “History Detectives” and fact-based scripted content such as “Blood Feuds”.
Nick is also chair of the Indie Training Fund which provides technical and professional training to the TV industry.
