Getting the message across: a Victorian inventor at King’s

In this exhibition we celebrate the life and achievements of Sir Charles Wheatstone (1802-75), scientist, inventor, pioneer of the electric telegraph and professor of experimental philosophy at King’s.

Visitors will be able to see some of the objects with whose invention this remarkable man was associated, including the electric telegraph, the stereoscopic photograph and a very unusual musical instrument.

Through Wheatstone’s letters and through items in his extensive personal library we explore his wide-ranging interests and his relationships with many of the leading scientists of his day, such as Michael Faraday. This exhibition will intrigue anyone with an interest in the history of science, musical instruments or the Victorian age.
