7th February, 2014 / 11.00am - 4.00pm
14th November, 2015
A weekend of Odissi (Indian Classical Dance) workshops with renowned dancer, international teacher and performing artist, Sonali Mishra. Odissi is a refined and powerful technique which includes elements of pure and narrative dance, through the use of codified hand gestures and rhythmic footwork. Inspired by Indian temple sculptures, Odissi was originally a dance performed for ritual purposes until reaching the secular stage in the 20th century and becoming an internationally practiced and admired technique.
Saturday 14th November: 4 hours
Beyond Basics: A Technical Workshop
In this workshop we will go deeper into our exploration of Odissi technique, form and vocabulary. Through excerpts from pure dance choreographies (Pallavi) and variations on walking and travelling, we will refine movement, transitions and develop a stronger awareness of our framing and placement within the Odissi aesthetic.
Sunday 15th November: 4 hours
Elements of Expression: An Abhinaya Workshop
Here we will be exploring the concept of character through Odissi abhinaya (storytelling) choreographies and Sanskrit verses. The focus will be on the different dimensions of the female character, from its capacities to love maternally and romantically, to the strength and power the feminine embodies.
Workshops are open to all levels, but some knowledge of Indian classical dance is preferable.
