A quick-fire look at some of the most pressing questions raised by today’s music business with Vera Bohl from the University of Westminster

What does it take to break a song on the internet? How do you set up a production company or online PR business? How do I set my own price and understand my market?

In this colloquium we’ll also look at necessary aspects of self-promotion, working in a team versus working independently and other vital rescources such as the PRS, Music Tank and The Unsigned Guide.

Vera Bohl

Aged 21, Vera set up Blend TV, a German independent Music TV show featuring the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Björk, The Strokes and many more. After working for MTV as a freelance producer, she felt the urge to set up a music channel away from the major channels and after 130 shows she left for London to study.

A musician herself, she found herself recording her album in Nigel Godrich’s studio (Beck, Radiohead) and writing music for other artists (Dido). Soon after, she was employed by Microsoft’s Paul Allen and Eurythmic’s Dave Stuart to manage the Hospitals’ Creative Scheme, managing a wide range of successful young artists.

Vera has secured brand collaborations such as Evian and Kinder Chocolate. Simultaneously, she set up Studioweek, a management and production company based in East London. Since 2012 she has been lecturing for Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts, London), Westminster and SAE Institute. Through her teaching, she aims to empower students to strive for excellence in their field and to give incentives on how to build a network or business in the music industry.
