Join us to celebrate the launch of Professor Reina Lewis’ new book Muslim Fashion: Contemporary Style Cultures, published by Duke University Press.
In treating the hijab and other forms of modest clothing as fashion, Reina counters the overuse of images of veiled women as “evidence” in the prevalent suggestion that Muslims and Islam are incompatible with Western modernity. Focusing on Britain, North America, and Turkey, and featuring interviews with key players, including designers, bloggers, shoppers and retailers, the book provides insights into the ways young Muslim women use multiple fashion systems to negotiate religion, identity, and ethnicity.
To evaluate the present and future of modest dressing and religiously related consumption, Reina is joined by a panel of commentators and fashion industry insiders. Speakers include: Shelina Janmohamed, Vice President of Ogilvy Noor Islamic branding practice and author of Love in a Headscarf and Generation M: New Muslims, New Style; Marilyn Booth, Professor of the Study of the Contemporary Arab World at Oxford University, author of Classes of Ladies of Cloistered Spaces: Writing Feminist History through Biography in Fin-de-Siècle Egypt; and Samia Khan and Adviya Khan, founders of modest style and lifestyle blog Hijablicious, inspirational advisors to new bloggers and consultants to established and new brands in the sector.
