A film …
Artist and researcher, Sukey Parnell, will show an exploratory filmwork, that responds to questions of image, ‘femininity’ and ageing.
A talk …
Western culture has a rich history of images and narratives of older women that, for the most part, has been forgotten. What is that ‘herstory’ and is beauty part of those past stories and images? Or is it about the power and majesty of becoming? Dr Woodspring will broach this question as the discussant to Ms Parnell’s film.
A dialogue …
Sukey Parnell and Naomi Woodspring have maintained a dialogue around the central question, ‘Who or what represents ageing women in society at this time?’, for close to three years as both Ms Parnell and Dr Woodspring worked to complete their PhDs. They will carry on this dialogue before a Q&A and discussion with the audience.

SUKEY PARNELL is an award-winning photographer with a unique focus on transitions and the portrayal of ageing and ‘femininity’. Her work has appeared in various exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, amongst others, and in many leading publications including The Sunday Times and The Independent. She is currently in the final stages of a PhD by Practice at the University of West London.
DR NAOMI WOODSPRING is a Research Fellow at The University of the West of England. She is the author of Baby Boomers, Time, and Ageing Bodies (Policy Press) to be released December 2015.
DR HANNAH ZEILIG is a Senior Research Fellow at University of the Arts and a discussant. The event links with Dr Zelig’s guest editorship of the current edition of Age Culture Humanities, Mirror Mirror: Representations and Reflections on Age and Aging.
