A symposium celebrating the professional life of one of the design industry’s leading figures.

Prof. Rodney Fitch (1938-2014), one of the post-war design industry’s leading figures, has been widely recognised for placing design and creative innovation at the heart of successful business strategy. His career spanned four decades and included many high-profile projects with major clients, both at home and internationally. This symposium, organised by Central Saint Martins, is an opportunity for commentators, design industry professionals, and friends who worked alongside Rodney, to put his significant personal contribution to design culture, enterprise and education into an academic and historical context.
Design professionals, design students, and academics, as well as those who worked and collaborated with Prof. Rodney Fitch, are invited to this informal symposium and panel discussion, which will look at aspects such as the professionalisation of design, the emergence of the multi-disciplinary design agency, and the globalisation of design culture. The event will conclude with a Q&A and we expect a lively discussion with the audience.
The symposium is immediately followed by a larger event at Central Saint Martins to celebrate Rodney’s life and work, and will feature reminiscences and an exhibition, bringing together his friends and collaborators from the design industry and design education. More information about it is available on www.rodneyfitch.com including details of how to RSVP.

The symposium is free and open to all members of the UAL staff and the public; however, spaces are strictly limited, and booking is essential.
