Brahms’s Die schöne Magelone is a tale of chivalric love, of knights in shining armour.
Alone of the Romantic song cycles, it needs a connecting narrative – to flesh out the story, to make sense. But what if there’s another story going on underneath? And what if Clara Schumann tells it?
