Andri has been brought up as the adopted son of the town’s teacher and believes himself to be a Jew rescued from a neighbouring country. His day-today life starts to be threatened by a rising tide of anti-Semitism when it is revealed that his origin is a lie and he is in fact the teacher’s illegitimate son.
Even after the truth is revealed the townspeople and invading army refuse to accept that Andri is one of them.
This extraordinary play written fifteen years after the end of the Second World War concerns itself with cultural prejudice and hypocrisy. The current crises in the Middle East and our ‘distant’ responses to them make this a timely moment to revive this play.
