BBC1’s contemporary reimagining of the Sherlock Holmes cannon includes a much needed injection of femininity in the form of Molly Hooper. Working in the fictional “Bart’s hospital morgue” Molly’s character has much in common with the museum’s technical curator, Carla Valentine, a qualified senior mortuary technician who now works at Barts. Join Carla to learn the realities of working in mortuaries in the UK as an Anatomical Pathology Technologist and find out how Barts and Sherlock Holmes are connected.
Carla Valentine is a Senior APT receiving both her Certificate and Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology. Through the course of her eight year career she carried out autopsies on Coronial and hospital cases, both paediatric and adult, as well as forensic. This work also included CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) and other high risk cases. In her spare time she studied Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology, and excavated graves in Poulton, Chester as well as Belgium and Venice.
She is now Technical Curator at Barts Pathology Museum and runs a networking site for others who work in the death industry: Dead-Meet.
