‘Haunted’ painting depicts fabled ship discovered off the coast of Canada

The fabled ship from Sir John Franklin’s expedition, which was discovered off the coast of Canada in September after disappearing in 1845, is depicted in the mysterious painting ‘Man Proposes, God Disposes’ from Royal Holloway’s Art Collection. The painting by Sir Edwin Landseer, which illustrates two polar bears attacking the ship, is well-known on campus as it is rumoured to be haunted. The legend is so enduring that the College covers the painting during the annual exam period to ease students’ fears that the painting will bring them bad luck.
