Grand Hotel is based on the 1929 Vicki Baum novel and play, Menschen im Hotel (People in a Hotel), and the subsequent 1932 MGM feature film. Events take place over the course of a weekend at the Grand Hotel, Berlin, in 1928.
The plot intertwines the lives of a fading prima ballerina, a handsome, young but penniless Baron, a terminally ill Jewish bookkeeper who wishes to spend his final days living in luxury, and a businessman who succumbs to temptation in the form of a young typist dreaming of a Hollywood career – all of whom are quietly observed by a cynical, war veteran doctor.
