Venue:
ICA Studio, The Mall, London, SW1Y 5AH

This session explores the intersection between ‘performance’, understood as a post-disciplinary art practice within the context of contemporary art and in its poststructuralist conception as the moment of production of meaning.

To what extent has the so-called ‘performativisation’ of art since the early 1990s been influenced and perhaps also been shaped by performance seen as an intensified moment of meaning production? What are the critical shortcomings of such an understanding of performance within the context of contemporary art? Can it even be avoided or is it immanent to the understanding of performance as a post-disciplinary art practice?

Studio Sessions are staged as part of the affiliation between the ICA and Kingston University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, and the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy.
