The conference will bring together UK and international speakers from arts practice, art education, curation and cultural criticism to ask what is the current relationship between aesthetic judgement and social distinction?

Since the publication of Pierre Bourdieu’s Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste, it has often been assumed that the aesthetic dimension of taste is less important than its role in constructing social distinctions. Taste After Bourdieu changes this orientation by working from the aesthetic idea of taste towards its social and cultural dimensions, through an examination of four key domains for the judgement of taste – the gallery, the museum, the street and the home – that are also important sites of practice, scholarship and research at UAL.
