“Great course, 100% wonderful!” Participant 2012

The Creative Music Training Summer School offers a unique opportunity for musicians and educators to develop and study collaborative workshop-leading skills and creative ways of communicating through music in diverse participatory contexts.

Music leaders of the 21st century are required to fulfil many roles – as leader, conductor, collaborator, improviser, composer and educator. This new five day summer school is designed to equip practitioners with skills which aid and support effective workshop leading and collaborative music making.

Through sessions focused on improvisation, collaborative composition, percussion skills (drawing upon traditions from around the globe), harmony, leadership and conducting, participants in the Creative Music Training Summer School will develop skills including flexibility and a knowledge of a wide range of musical styles, fluency within improvisation, rhythmic strength, vocal confidence, strong physical presence and use of body language as well as the ability to multitask.

In addition to structured classes, each student will become part of a creative ensemble – giving participants the opportunity to practically implement their learning with one of Barbican Guildhall’s collaborative ensembles of young people – and a mentoring group enabling reflective discussion and consolidation of the ideas covered in the course.

Each day will begin with a whole group warming-up session and end with all participants coming together for an informal sharing of music making from the day.
