Can even we know our own inmost thoughts? In John Ford’s baroque psychological drama, a masterpiece of the Renaissance stage, the Spartan court is corrupted by jealousy, broken faith, ambition and misconceived notions of honour.
In subjecting his characters to intense passions, Ford examines with an obsessive eye the effects of Fate and the pressure of the subconscious – if indeed Fate and the subconscious are not one and the same…
