Chelsea Futurespace is delighted to present 8 + 1 = 16, an exhibition that examines approaches to painting, image, narrative, abstraction, materials, and modes of display.

For this exhibition eight artists (8) were invited to each show a single work alongside a series of paintings by artist/exhibition maker Donald Smith (1) to create eight pairs (16). As the viewer goes from wall to wall Smith’s eight minimal paintings, each the same size and same materials, are a point of recognition and repetition whilst the works they are paired with are all very different visually and conceptually. These highly coloured simplistic constructions act as curatorial signposts pointing out the work of the other artists and leading us through the exhibiting space.
